When the World is Your Class Room
We are easing back into our routine of school and took the learning outdoors today. We took advantage of low tide and decided to explore creatures we might find in tide pools. The kids love doing this and seem to find something new no matter how many times before we have explored this area.
A crab scurried to hiding underneath the rock ledge…
Then R was intrigued with the fast tiny fish that were in the “pools”.
These tiny creatures prompted an interesting discussion after our visit. We will be doing some research on them at the library next week. Loved they had so many questions about them!
Don’t you just love the innocent investigative qualities of children…so sad we seem to lose that somewhat as adults, it is such a wonderful quality and something I can learn from my kidlets.
Here K has a handful of razor clam shells, she is going to use them in some upcoming art projects.
When do you begin your “official” schooling time?

A Day In the Life
There are many ways to home school…eclectic…Charlotte Mason..traditional…unschool…and many more. So many I meet that are new to homeschooling ask me what is a typical day for us. While we are probably “classified” as eclectic I also let them know there are so many ways you can teach your child and as many ways as there are, there is always a good fit for the child and family and it may take trying a few methods before arriving at what works.
This gave me the idea to feature different families in a typical day setting, sharing what it is they do, how they do and maybe even why this works for them.
I now pose that same question to you as well. If you are a home schooling family I would love to feature you in a new section of my blog…A Day In the Life. What does a typical day in your schooling life look like?
Please contact me if you are interested in being featured!

School Is About In Session
Around here school begins early August, but IF we are not schooling year round we get done late April early May and the kids get an extended vacation. The downside to this is none of us want to get back to the grind again. That is where we are now. I am contemplating heading back to the year round schedule with a week off here and there.

I am in the process of working out the last bit of curriculum for the kids and I am going to break us all in slowly doing a lot of outdoor exploration intertwined with our studies. I love teaching them when they do not even realize they are being taught.

The kids age difference does pose a challenge at times, and at others it is a blessing. The ages of my kids are 15, 11 and 6 in grades 10th, 6th and 1st. It is fun watching them at each stage of their learning and I do have my oldest “teach” the younger 2 a little…he learns in the process because he needs to first learn the material well enough to teach his younger brother and sister, so it is a win win for me as I get a little break during the week for an hour or so and he learns the art of teaching.
I have a lot of fun educational things planned for this year and I for one am looking forward to getting back in the routine of things…the routine is the hardest thing…for me…after being foot loose and fancy free all summer.
Do you get back into the routine easy after being away from it for the summer? What helps YOU to do so?
